Traditional food in Barranquilla

In Colombia, there are different regions and each of them offers its own gastronomy, so the offer is very wide to satisfy all tastes. Egg Arepa – Arepa de Huevo

Mote de Queso – Cheese Soup

The mote de queso is a thick soup typical of the Colombian coast made from yam (a tuber) and salty cheese.

“Posta” Meat and Coconut Rice

Thick-cut meat with a lot of flavor in its sauce is offered sweet with panela or salty.

Sancocho

A traditional dish in Colombia. It is a nutritious soup that contains plantains, yam, potato, and corn on the cob. The protein is provided by the meaty rib of beef. The famous triphasic sancocho adds chicken and pork to the rib.

Pastel

A typical dish from the Caribbean coast and very popular in Barranquilla, the bocachico is a river fish, stuffed with vegetables and grilled. It is common to serve it in traditional Colombian restaurants located on the side of the Magdalena River. It is accompanied with yuca and rice patacones.

Coconut Water

Popular sale of green coconut, it is served in its original packaging, a very sharp machete is responsible for peeling it a little, opening a hole to insert a straw to drink the delicious frozen coconut water. When the water is finished, the coconut is divided in two and the soft meat is eaten.

Raspa’o

The Raspa’o cart travels around the city offering this refreshing drink:

Shaved ice served in a disposable cone and sweetened with essences of your choice, lemon, Kola, or tamarind. You can add a crown of condensed milk that enhances its flavor. The ice with which it is made is a block that is transported uncovered, you must evaluate its hygiene.

Fruit Stand

It is common to see a wheelbarrow or cart that offers a variety of tropical fruits, mango, papaya, banana, melon, and pineapple in addition to seasonal fruits such as mamón, and plum. These carts offer tutti frutti or salpicón which is a mix of all fruits in orange juice, thick to eat with a spoon.

Mango with Salt and Lemon

You find it in the corners of wheelbarrows where they cut the mango into small pieces and put them in a plastic bag. Add salt, lemon, and pepper. If you are a foreigner and you want to try in the shopping centers, you will find carts and cut the mango into strips.

Pandebono

Pandebono is traditional Colombian cheese bread. If you come to Barranquilla in all the shopping centers you will find a Mr. Bono stand. It is definitely something you must try.

Butifarra

Very popular street-sold pepper-seasoned beef sausage, it comes in the form of small balls attached to each other and is served with a yucca bun. If you are a tourist and want to try it, it is better to go to the supermarket and buy the ones that come packed.

Peto

Peto is a corn drink. It is sold by gentlemen who pass with wheelbarrows on bicycles and carry a metal pot. They make a sound with a horn and it is a characteristic sound, it seems to say PE-TO-PE-TO.

Juices in “fruteras”

There are many “fruteras” in Barranquilla. There are a variety of fresh juices such as orange juice, tangerine, carrot, zapote, medlar, and the famous tutti frutti (a mixture of various fruits in orange juice), among others.

Patillazo

A drink made of watermelon. It is very refreshing. You find it on the street or in shopping centers.

Chicharron

It is a portion of pork with skin that is fried in its own fat. They are eaten as snacks in meetings.

Bollo

The woman who sells the bollo carry a basin on her head. The bollo comes in different flavors and colors.

  • Bollo de mazorca, made of yellow corn.
  • Bollo limpio, corn with cheese.
  • Bollo de angelito sweet white corn mace with coconut and anise
  • Bollo de yuca, harder consistency and a mild flavor.

Coffee

Colombia is known for its delicious coffee. You can find coffee in shopping centers like Juan Valdéz, Oma, Tostao. In many cafes and restaurants, there are also gentlemen who carry thermoses in the street that sell coffee.

Traditional desserts in Barranquilla

Cocadas

A whole variety of small portions of sweets made with fruits and coconut. There are milk cocadas, pineapple, and papaya that take the name Caballito.

A sweet that represents the Caribbean spirit and its name evokes the coastal feeling: Alegría (Joy). La Alegría is a ball of millet compacted with panela molasses and seasoned with pieces of caramelized coconut flavored with anise, a real delicacy !! Its sale is traditionally proclaimed by women of the Palenquera race who from 4 in the afternoon sing loudly: Alegria with coconut and anise!

Enyucado

Sweet grated cassava cake, roasted, garnished with coconut and cheese.

Frozo Malt

You can only get the Frozo Malt at the Heladeria Americana. Is ice cream with a smooth chocolate flavor and the texture of a milkshake. It comes with tropical fruit jelly (the secret touch) and a cookie.

Hot Dog Stand

In the hot dog stand you find a variety of foods that are very popular in Barranquilla such as:

“Chuzo Desgranado”

The shelled chuzo can be made of chicken, meat, chorizo, sausages. It has thin fries that are used for hot dogs, cheese, lettuce, bollo, and sauces like tartar, Rosada (ketchup with mayonnaise), and pineapple. If you want, you can add corn and bacon.

“Mazorca Desgranada” – Corn

It is made with sweet corn and added thin french fries that are used for hot dogs, cheese, lettuce, and sauces such as tartar, Rosada (ketchup with mayonnaise), and pineapple.

Hot Dog

The hot dog Barranquillero in addition to bread and sausage it is added cheese, fried potatoes, lettuce, sauces such as tartar, Rosada (ketchup with mayonnaise), mustard, mayonnaise, and pineapple. You can add bacon and chimichurri. There are a variety of sausages to choose from.
